There are few leaves more nutritious then our organic Black Tuscan Kale or ‘Nero di Toscana’ in Italian. Grown in genuine soil without the use of any chemicals this crop gives you all the goodness without any harmful substances. Freshly harvested every morning you simply can’t find any better. This variety dates back to the early 1800s at least. It has beautiful, heavily savoyed, deep black-green leaves. This Italian heirloom is popular in Tuscany as well as in central Italy for making fabulous soups and stews and is one of the most beautiful and flavorful types you can grow. We love eating this variety raw in salads or use it for juices and smoothies.
As Kale is a leafy rather than a headed brassica, it is closer to the original wild cabbage than any other type in this family and therefore probably one of the oldest forms. Until the end of the Middle Ages Kale was one of the most common green vegetables in all of Europe. Curly leafed varieties of cabbage already existed along with flat leafed varieties in Greece in the 4th century BC. These forms, which were referred to by the Romans as Sabellian Kale, are considered to be the ancestors of modern kales.
