Eggplants grow in bushes that can be harvested for up to three months. They are native to the Indian subcontinent and have been cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since pre-historic times. They are believed to have been introduced into Europe by the Ottomans in the early Middle Ages. Different varieties of the plant produce fruit of different size, shape and colour, though the elongated ovoid shape in purple is the most common. Eggplant is one of the only crops we can grow outside in full sun throughout the summer.
